Future Finance and Social Innovation: The Great Shift

MaRS Discovery District, College Street, Toronto, ON, Canada

Change is in the air

The greatest exchange of generational money the world has ever seen will happen over the next 40 years. Close to 60 trillion dollars will be transferred from baby boomers to women and the Millennial and Gen-X generations. At the same time, the financial services sector is undergoing major disruption due to innovations in financial technology. FinTech companies are providing new ways to lend, borrow, invest, exchange and transfer money. The coming decade will see a major transformation in the way individuals, entrepreneurs and companies get access to finance and investment opportunities. Areas that have traditionally been restricted to large organizations and the wealthiest members of society will open up to vast numbers of people globally. This combination of social and technological change offers tremendous opportunities to impact investors, mission-led businesses and social enterprises. Wealth management professionals and fund managers will also need to understand the challenges and opportunities in order to adapt to these changes and sustain and grow their businesses. In order to stay relevant, it will become increasingly important for all those dealing in wealth and investment to pay attention to the shifting priorities of the new generation.

Beyond Socially Responsible Investing (SRI)

The “triple bottom line” – financial, social and environmental returns – is driving the spending and investment patterns of the younger generation, who hold different values and have different approaches to money than their parents. This generation has more explicit impact goals when it comes to how their wealth is invested, and growing up in a tech age, means they are more comfortable with technologies including FinTech and aware of concepts like inclusive capitalism. Similarly, women are more likely to prioritize sustainability and social impact alongside capital gain. Entrepreneurs from this generation are interested in the triple bottom line – it’s not enough just to gain capital; making a positive contribution to society is viewed on equal footing. They all have one thing in common: they want their money to make a difference in the world.

Building a global social finance marketplace

Future Finance and Social Innovation: The Great Shift will provide a look at the investing goals of the next generation, and the impacts crowdfunding and other technology platforms will have on the investing environment. We’ll explore the idea of a social entrepreneur and what it means to be involved with social innovation. The conference will bring together traditional and impact investors, FinTech companies, financial services firms and social enterprises, policy makers and thought leaders to analyse the great shift that is starting to occur. Together, we’ll co-create strategies for building a robust global social finance marketplace, as impact investing transforms from a niche investing strategy to a mainstream global one focused on people, planet and profit. Connection and understanding are key – for those who want to make a difference in the world, and for those who wish to continue to participate meaningfully in the future economy.

Who Should Attend?

Forward-thinking Family Offices and wealth managers/advisors who want to get a sense of the space and learn about the opportunities impact investing can provide for them

Social entrepreneurs and social enterprises interested in connecting with and helping grow the impact investing and social innovation community

FinTech and alternative finance providers looking to expand their networks and explore their role in the changing investment environment.

Venture capitalists and angel investors keen to learn how the investing landscape is changing, and meet potential co-investment partners from the US, UK and Canada as well as companies on the leading edge of FinTech and other technology sectors.

As well as:

  • Banks and pension funds
  • Senior business leaders and entrepreneurs
  • Innovation enablers (accelerators, incubators)
  • Government policy makers and program managers
  • Financial and legal professional service providers

The Research Money Conference in London, UK on Alternative Finance was a great success. I attend many conferences, but Research Money stood out. It was the combination of the many great people who gathered there – authentic personalities with deep knowledge and impressive experience – with red-hot topics that were discussed between investors, thought-leaders, think-thanks and experts. The atmosphere was constructive, positive and vibrant. It would be an enormous pleasure to contribute again to the next conference.

Tabitha has worked with some of the best known names in software (Microsoft), advertising (Vickers & Benson), retail (Canadian Tire) and banking (BDC, BMO, Scotiabank). She has helped banks bring their business online in three separate waves of banking evolution. Wave 1, in the 1990’s, the development of online presence and early experiments in online banking. Wave 2 in the 2000’s, bringing their monolithic green screens into a Windows-based environment and improving using technology to improve the customer experience. And Wave 3, in the 2010’s, redefining the relationship of capital to borrowing, and levelling the playing field for credit unions and community banks to compete with their national bank counterparts. A passionate advocate for transparency and accountability in banking, she works tirelessly behind the scenes of both the securities and banking industries to find ways to make them more accessible for the businesses and investors who make up more than 50% of North American jobs and economy. She runs her North American company, InvestNextDoor, from their many locations, making her an inadvertent expert on frequent travel. “Impact investing” is a form of values-based investing that integrates financial returns and social and environmental risk and value into a single bottom line. It is not a new industry sector, nor is it an asset class. It is an investment methodology that goes across all asset classes, and represents the single fastest growing domain of professionally managed assets globally. This engaged panel dialogue will outline leading edge opportunities for institutional and individual investors to leverage their assets for financial gain while lowering portfolio risk and delivering long-term positive social and environmental outcomes.
